The Lamar Jackson Trade Saga: Who Will Bite the $230 Million Bullet?

Lamar Jackson's High-Stakes Gamble: Is the NFL Ready for Guaranteed Contracts?

This revelation sparked discussions among NFL coaches at the owners' meetings, with Jackson becoming a hot topic of conversation. The 2019 NFL MVP had received a non-exclusive franchise tag earlier this offseason, allowing him to negotiate with other teams. However, no team has reached out to Jackson, possibly due to his high asking price.

Jackson's demand for a fully guaranteed contract, similar to the one Deshaun Watson received from the Cleveland Browns, is reportedly a significant factor in the stalled negotiations. With a five-year, $230 million deal on the table, it seems unlikely that any team will be willing to match or exceed this price.

The Indianapolis Colts trade, a potential destination for Jackson, have been mentioned in recent NFL trades talk. While Colts owner Jim Irsay has not dismissed the possibility of discussing a deal with Jackson, he expressed his disapproval of fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL during a recent interview with The Athletic:

"As an owner, I do not believe in fully guaranteed contracts," Irsay said. "I think that a percentage is one thing, but from what I've seen from the NBA and baseball, I don't see it as a positive competitively."

Irsay's old-school approach to contracts is evident in his belief that guaranteed contracts would be detrimental to the league. Colts nfl general manager Chris Ballard also commented on the possibility of adding Jackson to the team, stating that they would be doing their due diligence on all positions.

"Anytime a special player is available, which he is, you've got to do the work," Ballard said, according to ESPN. "I'm not going to get into deep discussions on where it's at or what we're doing or what we might do, but what I'll tell you is he's a really good player, really special player. But you never know how any of this will work out."

Conclusion:

With the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Colts have a unique opportunity to select a rookie quarterback. While it is likely that the Colts will consider pursuing Jackson, his hefty price tag may prove to be a significant obstacle in finalizing a deal.
